With a population of 665,643 which constitutes a 42.83% growth in population since 1990, Charlotte is a growing area that is attracting leading businesses from across the United States and the world. In fact, 600 foreign-owned companies have facilities in the Charlotte region in part due to the inland port facility, a foreign trade zone, and the area's customs and immigration offices.
Charlotte's Diverse Industries
Once only known as the major banking center of the Southeast second only to New York City in banking resources based on Wachovia and Bank of America's $1 trillion dollars in holdings, Charlotte has now emerged as a leader in attracting corporate relocation.
From the 48 biotech firms who have relocated to Charlotte and the 18 optoelectronic facilities located within the region, Charlotte has a diversified base from which to provide employment for its citizens.
Even the United States government has recognized the value of Charlotte as a location, four of the nation's top ten defense contractors have relocated to facilities in the Charlotte area and have since generated $160 million in contracts.
Moreover, city and county incentives, continue to drive the migration of companies to the Charlotte area, including programs such as the Facade Improvement Grant Program (which provides $10,000 for facade renovation, landscaping or signage improvements. Additionally, organizations have been established specifically focused on providing bonds to fund new business, such as North Carolina's Counsel for Entreperneurial Development (NCCED).
